Okay so let's jump into the seven step process to get started as a freelancer because a freelance career is a great alternative to working a job that you don't like.
7 steps that makes freelancing easier for you
Step#1 The first step might seem completely obvious but that is simply to choose what service you're going to offer, so in order to be able to make money as a freelancer. First you have to figure out how you're going to help people, what are you going to do for them, are you going to be a freelance photographer, are you going to be a freelance web designer, or a freelance writer, there are tons of different jobs out there that people are looking to hire others to do for them like writing, photography, web design etc. and you just need to choose which one you want to help people.
Now, of course you want to do your research first you want to choose something that you'll enjoy doing but also something that you're willing to put in the effort to learn how to do it and do it really well. So you might think that being a freelance app developer sounds like something you'd really enjoy but if you're not willing to put in the work to do the studies and learn what you need to know and get the skills then that's probably not going to be the best choice for you. Different freelance jobs require different amounts of effort in order to learn the skills and there's lots of different things involved with these different drops so just do your research first and decide exactly what skill you want to offer as a freelancer.
Step#2 Step number two falls right in line with that and that is simply to then go ahead and learn the skills that you need in order to be able to do that work. There are lots of different ways to learn what you need to know anything from going to a university and getting a degree in it to taking classes at your local community college or even taking courses online. I'm talking about sites like Coursera.com and creativelive.com, these online course platforms might not be able to provide you with everything that you need but you can at least get started learning the basics at a really affordable cost.
Step#3 Step number three to become a freelancer is to then clarify your message and your offer so you've already decided what service you're offering but now you need to figure out how to package it and frame it so that you're not just another graphic designer or just another freelance writer this means you need to figure out exactly who your target customer is going to be. So are you going to write for magazines or are you going to write for blogs, are you going to write about food or are you going to write about health, and then you need to decide how much you're going to charge for these services and exactly what you offer. So are you writing articles or are you writing books, are you charging by the hour or by the project, you also need to figure out your marketing messages which basically just means that you need to figure out how you're going to convince people that hiring you would be helpful to them this might mean you're saying I'll design your website for you and save you a lot of time or you might be saying all edit your videos for you so that your videos turn out better.
Step#4 Now the fourth step might be the one that most people seem to find the very most challenging and that is to gain credibility and gain experience. The reason this is so hard is because it's all well and good to learn the skills that you need and to decide how you're going to charge people but then getting your first customer and trying to prove yourself when you have absolutely no experience can be really challenging.
Now typically the best and easiest way to start getting some credibility and some experience is to simply offer to help a few different customers for free and that way you can get a little bit of experience under your belt figure out what it's like to work with customers and how you need to improve your processes and you can also get some testimonials that you can use to prove yourself to future clients.
Step#5 Step five is to not only do that work and get that experience but to actually ask those people who you're helping for free are helping for a reduced rate for testimonials and for referrals. After you've done a great job helping someone out they will probably be more than happy to write you a great testimonial and tell you if they know anyone else who might be interested in your services also.
Step#6 Okay so step number six is for getting started at the freelancer is to then start bidding on jobs. You can make yourself a nice little website and decide what your packages look like and even do some work for free and get that little bit of experience but then you might not know how to get your next customer unless you start bidding on jobs. There are lots of great websites out there that help connect freelancers with businesses that are looking to hire freelancers I'm talking about sites like upwork.com and freelancer.com. You can also try peopleperhour.com and many other websites. So that you can check them out if you're ready to start bidding on jobs. Basically on these sites businesses post about jobs that they're looking to hire for things like editing a video or writing an article for a blog and then freelancers can make profiles on these sites and then bid on the jobs that have been posted. One of the great things about doing this kind of work is that over time you'll find businesses that are looking to hire repeatedly. So you'll slowly build up a roster of these long-term clients and help to fill up your entire work schedule.
Step#7 The seventh step for getting started as a freelancer and this is the final step but it's a very ongoing process to build an online brand, now you might think that you created a brand when you first set up your website and maybe you design a logo or choose a fund and name your business but actually building an online brand is a really long-term process that takes a lot of work. First of all you do have to decide what your brand looks like and especially what it sounds like who are your potential customers, who are you speaking to, what are you offering to them, all of that. All of those things set the foundation for building a strong online brand but then the actual process of building the brand is something that takes years and one of the best ways to do it is to create great free resources and free content just like this article here that I'm making and then share it on the Internet to attract new people into your audience. The bigger your audience gets the more potential customers are out there and the easier is for you to get the word out about the services that you offer.
Okay so these are the seven steps that you need to do in order to get to your career as a freelancer started. I wanted to share with you though a free resource that I think will really help you out. You might recall the fourth step was to gain credibility and gain experience but I know that this is something that a lot of freelancers have trouble with when they first get started. So I wrote this article all about how to get started when you have no credibility yet when you have no experience it's called establishing credibility from scratch. So it will walk you through the process really step by step of exactly how to get those first clients, how to get great testimonials and how to use that to your best advantage. So make sure you read all the seven steps very carefully.
